#42 Silent Suspicion

by Gaye Buzzo Dunn

The thrum of tires was the only sound as the blue Caddy sedan zipped along Florida’s Route Sixty at two o’clock in the morning. The car’s headlights pierced the unlighted highway passing trees and shrubs that appeared like black ghosts as they whizzed past. Tessa gazed out the passenger side window, her face taut, her lips set in an angry line. She barely noticed the dark panorama. All she could think about was John and that tall blonde at the party. Was he cheating on her again? She wouldn’t let him get away with it this time.

“John, slow down, you’re driving too fast.”

“Shut up Tess. There are hardly any cars on the road.”

“Didn’t you see the animal crossing signs? There are panther sightings in this county.”

“Well, I doubt any animals are moving around this time of night. And what’s bugging you anyway.”

“I saw you with . . . John Wait! There’s something lying in the middle of the road.”

“I don’t see anything.”

Tessa screamed when John swerved too late; hit the carcass head on and crashed into a tree.

*

Tessa opened her eyes. Everything was blurred. She saw what looked like wild flowers in a picture on a cream colored wall. A familiar hand held hers. Her vision cleared and John sat crying in a chair next to her bed. She squeezed his hand. Maybe, just maybe, things would be different this time.

I liked the description in the first paragraph of the sound of the car, the unlighted highway, the 'black ghosts'of the trees ans shrubs. Yes, hopefully things will be different this time!

Very nice piece: Love the feeling one gets when reading this; one becomes involved in the story right from the beginning.

Enjoyed the foreshadowing in the first paragraph, you just know that something is going to happen, yet there is optimism at the end.
